We're almost home!
Thing #22- Staying Current
As directed, I am resolving to continue my efforts to keep up with technology. I may need to review the many things I have already "learned", as my mind is not the steel trap it once was, and practice does make better if not perfect. I added LibraryBytes and LISNews to my RSS feeds.

Where was this when I was in school?
Thing 21- Student 2.0 tools
The Assignment Calculator and Research Project Calculator are such simple ideas, but they are super. Wish I had these...or thought to create them for myself... back in the dark ages when I was in school. They could easily be modified to accomodate the students schedule (you would need to fit in the dance classes, soccer games and of course Friday nights are party nights) and it would be a help for parents to keep better track of progress on assignments, rather than just hearing "I'm working on it". Getting this web site out to dedicated students (and the parents of not-so-dedicated ones) would be great. I liked the Minnesota 5 Student Research Planning Guide, the triangle to help narrow a broad topic, and the What is Research poster. All three would help keep a student focused and on the right track.

Sites, sites and more sites
Thing #20- Books 2.0
Lots and lots to read and digest in this "thing". So far this is my opinion on just a few of the mentioned sites.
Books on Your Phone- Thumbs up for Twitterlit...it gives the opening sentence of a book to tease and tempt you...a great way to find new authors.
Reader's Advisory- Thumbs down for What's next- this claims to show the next books in a series, but gave "o results" when I entered Stephanie Meyer's Twilight. You've got to be kidding!!! Nothing comes close to FantasticFiction.
Online Book Communities-LivingSocial: Books- This choice wasn't one that Neflin 'starred' as a favorite, but I found three friends who were on it. I have many patrons who wish they had a list of books they had read so as not to check out repeats, and this may be an option.
Book Group Resources- I checked out Booksprouts but didn't join. Guess I'm not ready to join a book group, but I do see the value for those who want to.
Audio Books-How cool is LibriVox? This group hopes to have all books (out of copyright) available in audio...and they are doing it by volunteers. Just tune up your vocal chords and start recording. It's quite an undertaking (they hope to have the recoded books available in all languages) but how great would that be?
Book Reviews- Thumbs up for Bookbrowse because it classifies books by genre and then breaks down the genre into specific catagories. The reviews are short but seem adequate to give the reader a good idea of what to find. I'd go back to this one.
Book Rentals- Okay...haven't these people heard of libraries? Why rent when you can borrow?
Facebook- for finding material it's hard to beat WorldCat.

Social Gather-Ning at WebJunction
Thing #19- Social Networking
I checked out as much as I could of WebJunction, Ning and Gather without actually joining any of them. Guess I would need to join to find any real value in them. I looked into Open Source Food (which now has a much cooler name- Nibbledish). Without joining, I was able to get recipes for most anything, and all had professionally taken photos, clear directions and the name of the originator of the recipe. Recipes are "tagged" which makes it great if you need a recipe to use up that half a kumquat in the back of the refrigerator. Unless you choose to add a recipe or comment on one, this works like any other great recipe website.

Be my 'friend'
Thing #18- Facebook and MySpace
After checking out both, I joined Facebook. Just key-in Molly Lucieer. I found a surprising number of people I knew simply by entering my email address and college name and graduation date. I added three friends (who fortunately accepted my friendship) and joined a group. I am now a member of "Don't Mess With Me, I Worked In a Public Library"...gotta check out the stories and crazy questions asked of library personal. I've left messages on a couple walls and even poked a fellow co-worker. I am waiting for someone to leave a message on my wall. The gift idea is bizarre. Does anyone really pay to send an icon to a friend on Facebook?...maybe I have this concept confused.
I added my blog to my Facebook page. Still not sure of 'poking' my co-workers. Isn't that considered "violence in the workplace"?
WELL HERE'S A NEW ONE...I was just super-poked by a co-worker...she threw a sheep at me. Don't know what I'm talking about?...guess you haven't done your Facebook homework yet.

A dingo ate my baby!
Okay...now I'm really confused. I am the least superstitious person you will ever meet, but sometime during Friday the 13th my laughing babies video from YouTube vanished from my blog. I tried to re-enter it and had no luck. I then found another laughing baby and couldn't add that to my blog either. All I have is a blank space where my "children" should be. How sad. But now it's Saturday evening and I'm heading home for a cocktail. (Does that make me a bad mother?)
Hello again- It's Monday and praise-be!! Sometime over the weekend (and I use that term lightly since I work on Saturdays) whoever stole my laughing baby on Friday returned it. My thanks to the cyber dingos.

Podcasts...how my job helped my golf game
Thing #17- I found podcasts a neat idea in principle, but not in practice. After waiting for what seemed like forever for a podcast to load in Podcast and PodcastAlley, I went to Yahoo Podcast and...Yahoo! I was able to find a golf lesson that loaded for me quickly. This was simple to use and I was given a choice of moving it to my Digg, my delicious or a Facebook location. I chose to simply put it on this blog by copy/pasting the enbedded code onto my dashboard.

You-Tube...at my age?
Thing #16- Never thought I'd be wandering through YouTube, but found some fun and funny videos. What is with the stopping and starting of the videos? Everyone I viewed did the same thing. To choose one to post I had to settle on one of the several laughing baby videos...who doesn't love a laughing baby?
I suggest everyone watch Conan the Librarian...it's a whole new way to look at customer service!

Rollyo, rollyo..who needs a rollyo
Thing#15- Think I'm tired and crabby, but my 'favorites' list will do just fine. Don't think I need Rollyo---but I'll take another look when I'm fresher.
Okay- after a relaxing day off I tried again to appreciate Rollyo. Although it will never be a favorite, I did create a Rollyo, and a search roll and linked it to my blog. Hooray for me.

Tools, tools and more tools
Thing #14- Online Productivity Tools- So here I looked at the various options for creating my home page and played around with lots of fun stuff in igoogle. I added a countdown widget to this blog, but chose to count down to my birthday to eliminate any angst about finishing the 23 things. I looked into the google calendar, but was not overly impressed. I'll stick with the version I use everyday for my job. As far as the tada list...give me paper and pencil any day.
It's now several days later and my email today included the reminder I set up in my Google calendar. Actually that was a nice feature.

My LibraryThing
Thing #13-Yet another way to save and view material. My LibraryThing was simple to create and design. I'm not through discovering what it will do...I'll be back with more info before Thing 13 is done. Looked through LibraryThingLocal and punched in Dunnellon, Florida. I found no activities but did find the Books-A-Million bookstore. This could be a great site when traveling but like any such site, it needs everyone to add to it.

Wiki mania
Thing#12-
Had my doubts about anything wiki. As we all know the good thing about wikipedia is that anyone can add, edit or delete information in it...and the bad thing is that anyone can add, edit or delete information in it. Therefore it is a site of last resort for valid information. BUT...I hadn't used pbwiki, wetpaint or wikispaces, or used them as shown in the video provided. It could be a great tool to use with people you know where input can be added or changed by members of the group. A library wiki could be used to gather information about materials patron and staff wished to add to the collection, and as items were added, that could be shown as well. I have made an entry on the neflins23thingspbwiki and am a full-fledged member of pbwiki...gotta love anything named peanut butter.

I can "Digg" it
Thing 11-
I chose to examine Digg (loved the icon of the little guy with the shovel) and used it to comment on the Washington Post article about President Obama's meeting next week on the sad state of the economy. I guess this type of site will show what patron's consider a priority, since it ranks information by popularity..what they are really interested in ...and what we as library staff should be familiarizing ourselves with.

Delicious Tags
Thing#10-
Lots to learn in Thing 10. I tagged several of my posts and went on to learn about Delicious. I'm questioning adding Delicious to my toolbar until I understand it a bit better. I think I need more information... It's a bit later now and I've opened a Delicious account and put Webjunction, Goodreads and LibraryThing in it. I tagged all with "library" as well as others and all came up when I entered the tag in my account. Seems like a good way to find not only information I have discovered, but information discovered by others as well...and moving from one computer to another...these 'favorites' are always available.

It's Christmas in February!
Thing#9- Sharing- slides, photos & databases
Loved this "thing". I used photos from our Christmas program and inserted them into various formats. Finally decided on the photo 'peel' from the Picture Trail program. Very easy to use and would be ideal for blogging pictures of the grandkids. I included a link to Picture Trail so others can experiment. I recommend it.

Finally a Spell with Flikr
More non-verbal communication
Thing #8- This "Thing" gives us even more ways to communicate non-verbally. I learned about IM-ing and tried unsuccessfully to communicate with a co-worker (who was sitting 10 feet from me). Also read about text messaging and web conferences. Seems I got good information, but certainly not ready to claim expertise.

Instant Messaging
Thing#8-
Looks like there's lots to do in #8. I've signed on to Meebo which at first glance appears to be a routing source for a number of instant messaging sites. I'm thinking you can send and receive IMs from AOL, Yahoo, MSN, Google etc. once you join Meebo. At least that is what it appears at first glance. Ran out of time (not an unusual occurance) and will need to do more research later. If my assumption is true it shouldn't matter which IM site others elect to use...I should be able to connect with them. If I'm wrong...we'd better all agree on one IM site to use.

Fooey on Flickr
Thing #6- After many days of frustration I have given up on attempting to place the 'spell with flickr' on my blog. I even emailed Kastner and was unable to complete this project....on to a Southern Comfort manhattan ...and then to #7.
Fun #*@?& with Flickr
Thing #5- Flickr
After too many attempts to understand the "simple" and "easy to use" Flickr, I think I have made at least an end road into completing this task. At the moment I am waiting for my photos to up load to the site. Keep your fingers crossed...I'm beginning to lose my patience.
Apparently all went well with my second attempt to upload my photos. They've been headlined and tagged. My personal opinion is Picasa is more user friendly. On to Thing #6.

Really Simple Syndication
Thing #4- RSS and News Feeds
This one frustrated me for several days till I received some advice from MM. Now I think I have completed the task, but will seek confirmation before patting myself on the back. I believe I have signed up for Yahoo! News: U.S. News; Yahoo! News: Most Recommended; Library of Congress: New on the Web and the Library of Congress Blog. I also added my fellow Dunn bloggers. My question is that I had assumed they would each show up on my blog, but seem to be accessed from the 'dashboard'. I'll double check with opthers and see if I'm on the right track. It appears to be SOOOO much information and so little time.
Thing#4- revised... After getting input from SS I was able to transfer my RSS feeds to my blog from my dashboard. Added some and deleted others. Think I'm ready for Thing #5.

Blah, blah blog
Thing #3- Blog search tools
I had some trouble with this 'thing'. I wasn't able to get on the google site blogsearch.com or searchtool.livejournal. The dreaded "internet explorer cannot open...yada yada yada" message kept appearing. I did find two I liked.
blogsearchengine.com and
eatonweb- the blog directory
I will try again.

Not your grandmother's library anymore
Thing #2- Checking out Library 2.0 & Web 2.0
After listening to Stephen Abram and reading information on Library 2.0 and Web 2.0, it is clear that we are no longer dealing with my Aunt Irene's (she was a librarian from 1935-1966) library. The need for libraries to change with the times will become all the more important as new technologies continue to shape the way we learn, work and live. I found most interesting the ideas of providing information to and for the public where and when they need it, outside the brick and morter building we think of as the "library". I love the idea of merging the information we currently have so as not to continually "reinvent the wheel" and to make that information readily available to everyone. I wasn't eager to spend MLK day stepping into Thing 2...but found it made me think of my profession in a new light.

Thing #1- setting up your blog
So far so good. Let's hope I'm doing this correctly and the blog actually shows up. This is all pretty new to me, but not too difficult yet.
